The winners of the “Award for the Best Report on the Right to Health” are announced, within the framework of the project “The Social Determinants of Health: the best strategy against COVID-19 in Maputo”, implemented by medicusmundi, in collaboration with the Municipal Council of Maputo and MISA Moçambique, and financed by the Municipality of Barcelona.

Social Determinants of Health

The media are key sources for communities to be accurately informed.

The awards for the “Best Report on the Right to Health” contest, carried out by medicusmundi, in collaboration with MISA, took place on February 8 at the MISA Moçambique facilities, within the framework of the implementation of the project “ Social Determinants of Health: the best strategy against COVID-19 in Maputo”, with financing from the Municipality of Barcelona.

The competition aimed to raise awareness in Mozambican society about the defence of the right to health and its social determinants and to increase the sensitivity of journalists, the media, public institutions and, in general, Mozambican society about the right to health, through improving the quality and quantity of reports on health and the different factors that influence it.

Isaura Afonso, a journalist from Rádio Moçambique, took first place, with a report that portrays the financing of the tobacco industry to the detriment of public health in the country. In second place was Sitoi Lutxeque, from Jornal Rigor, with a report on the diversion of medications and poor hospital care. And, thirdly, Enoque Daniel, journalist from MídiaLab, with an article that talks about the violation of the Abuja Declaration of 2001.

For Isaura Afonso, the award means recognition and visibility in the daily lives of journalists and serves as an incentive to continue reporting on various phenomena that occur in different areas of society.

For MISA Moçambique and medicusmundi, this contest represents a boost for the media, as they are key sources for communities to be accurately informed about the different issues that affect them in their daily lives, especially with regard to your health.

It should be noted that, in addition to the “Best Report on the Right to Health” contest, MISA Moçambique and medicusmundi trained 31 journalists and 15 journalism students nationwide in “Social Determinants of Health and Coverage of COVID-19” and have produced 1 report on monitoring media coverage on social determinants of health in the context of COVID-19 in Mozambique, available on the MISA website.
