From Training to Economic Independence: Delfina Turns Sewing into a Source of Income

Delfina’s story demonstrates how vocational training can create pathways to economic independence and open new opportunities in life.

Social Determinants of Health

Promoting independence, social inclusion, and the creation of more dignified lives free from violence.

In 2025, Delfina took part in a Cutting and Sewing course organised by the Hixikanwe Association, with the support of medicusmundi and funding from the Catalan Cooperation Agency. The training enabled her to acquire technical skills that have since become the foundation of an income-generating activity and an opportunity to build a more stable and independent future.

Today, sewing is Delfina’s main source of livelihood. By applying the knowledge and skills gained during the training, she produces and tailors’ garments to order, transforming her new professional expertise into a tool for improving her own living conditions and those of her family.

The impact of this initiative extends beyond her individual journey. After purchasing a sewing machine, Delfina chose to share this opportunity with another participant from the same training course who, despite successfully completing the programme, had not yet been able to acquire the equipment needed to start her own business. Today, the two women work together on sewing orders, generating income and strengthening their economic independence.

According to Delfina, the training marked a significant turning point in her life, providing her with new professional prospects, greater financial independence, and the opportunity to turn newly acquired skills into a productive and sustainable livelihood.

Her experience highlights the importance of investing in women’s vocational training and economic empowerment as key strategies for promoting independence, social inclusion, and the creation of more dignified lives free from violence.

Delfina’s story is a concrete example of how access to training and income-generating opportunities can help strengthen the role of women within their communities, creating positive impacts that extend far beyond the direct beneficiaries.

This activity was carried out as part of the project “Consolidating exit routes from gender-based violence in Maputo (Mozambique) - Phase 2”, implemented by medicusmundi in partnership with Rede HOPEM and Associação Hixikanwe, with funding from the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation (ACCD).
