Weaving Networks, Sharing Experiences, and Building the Future
The city of Maputo hosted the Conference on Gender-Based Violence on October 1 and 2, 2025, at the Meliã Maputo Sky Hotel. The event, under the theme "Weaving Networks, Sharing Experiences, and Building the Future" was organized by medicusmundi in collaboration with the Hixikanwe Association and Rede HOPEM, within the framework of the project "Consolidating exit routes from gender-based violence in Maputo (Mozambique) - Phase 2", funded by the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation (ACCD).
The Conference brought together civil society organizations, government representatives, international entities, academics, cooperation partners, and religious and cultural organizations in a space dedicated to critical analysis, institutional coordination, and the definition of comprehensive strategies for the prevention of and response to gender-based violence. Among the international entities, the participation of two representatives from INTRESS – the Institute of Social Work and Social Services, based in Barcelona – was noteworthy, with a presentation on the portfolio of services offered to women, girls, and boys.
The discussions were structured around five thematic panels that addressed emerging trends, operational challenges, and social implications in a national context marked by a significant increase in cases of violence, despite the progress made in legislation.
The main objective of the conference was to promote technical exchange and strengthen collaboration mechanisms, fostering the harmonization of practices and the consolidation of multisectoral approaches. The conference also highlighted the importance of community-based tools and social protection mechanisms capable of effectively responding to the dynamics of gender-based violence in the country.
The conference reaffirmed the role of medicusmundi and its partner organizations as catalysts for transformative processes aimed at promoting gender equality, institutional strengthening, and the reinforcement of public policies for protection and social justice.
This activity is part of the implementation of the project "Consolidating exit routes from gender-based violence in Maputo (Mozambique) - Phase 2", funded by the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation (ACCD) and implemented by medicusmundi, in collaboration with Associação Hixikanwe and Rede HOPEM.
