Social Determinants of Health

A significant step forward in the provision of comprehensive support services to women survivors.

The Comprehensive Care Centre (CCC) for women and girls survivors of gender-based violence was inaugurated today, March 18, 2026, in the Malhazine neighborhood, at the facilities of the Associação Hixikanwe. The event brought together representatives from civil society, government entities, implementing partners, the media, the community, beneficiaries, and community members, in a moment that symbolizes hope and commitment to the human rights of women and girls.

Built from scratch, the centre includes three consultation rooms, a multipurpose room, and a temporary accommodation room. The technical team includes a psychologist, responsible for providing emotional support, and a social worker, in charge of ensuring proper follow-up on cases, representing a significant step forward in the provision of comprehensive support services to women survivors.

The inauguration ceremony was presided over by the Head of the Gender Department, Francina Maqueque, who highlighted the Comprehensive Care Centre (GAI) as a safe, dignified, and essential space for welcoming and referring women survivors, officially marking its opening to the public.

On this occasion, Ana Narváez Temprano, Director of medicusmundi in Mozambique, emphasized that the CCC is the result of a joint commitment between partners and authorities to respond to gender-based violence, reinforcing that mitigation efforts must be both global and rooted in local communities. This new facility thus emerges as a concrete response to ensure that women survivors of gender-based violence in the city and province of Maputo have access to integrated, humane, and high-quality services, promoting the restoration of their rights and strengthening their psychological, legal, and socioeconomic autonomy. With this new infrastructure, it is hoped to strengthen the support network for women victims and survivors and contribute to a more effective and coordinated response in the prevention of and fight against gender-based violence in Maputo.

This activity is part of the project “Moving towards a life free from gender-based violence in Maputo”, funded by the Valencian Government / Valencian Cooperation and implemented by medicusmundi, in collaboration with the Maputo City Health Service (SSCM), Associação Hixikanwe, and Centro de Acolhimento NHAMAI.
