On November 28, the Hixikanwe Association held a foundation stone laying ceremony for the Comprehensive Care Centre (GAI), a community facility designed to provide care, protection, and referrals to women victims of gender-based violence (GBV) in Maputo. The future office will operate within the association's own facilities, reinforcing its role as a leading organization in psychosocial and community support.
The symbolic ceremony was presided over by Begoña Hermida, representing medicusmundi, and by Judite de Jesus Mutote, representing the Hixikanwe Association. Local organizations, founding members of the association, and various guests also attended the ceremony.
In her speech, Judite de Jesus highlighted the importance of building the Comprehensive Care Centre (GAI), stating that the initiative represents a significant step towards a life free from violence in the city of Maputo, by providing a safe and specialized space to welcome and support victims seeking to report situations of violence.
For her part, Begoña Hermida emphasized the importance of the continued mobilization of community and institutional actors, calling for perseverance in the fight against all forms of violence. “It is essential that we maintain courage, struggle, and determination. Only in this way can we build safer and violence-free communities”, she declared.
This work is part of the implementation of the program “Moving towards a life free from gender-based violence in Maputo”, funded by the Valencian Government / Valencian Cooperation and implemented by medicusmundi, in collaboration with the Hixikanwe Association, the Nhamai Association, and the Maputo City Health Service. This 3-year program aims to strengthen community prevention, support and response actions to gender-based violence, from a comprehensive perspective of human rights, public health and social protection.
