Social Determinants of Health

To facilitate understanding through concrete examples, stories, and practical experiences, capturing the attention of the youngest students.

From May 28 to 30 and June 4 and 5, 2025, talks on justice and the rights of persons with disabilities were held at several schools in the city of Maputo, specifically at “Unidade 10” and “Amílcar Cabral” primary schools, as well as “Lhanguene” and “Munhuana” secondary schools.

The sessions were aimed at a variety of audiences, including elementary and secondary school students and their teachers. For students in grades 1 to 6, an expository-illustrative methodology was used, which included direct contact with assistive devices such as crutches, Canadian canes, white canes, Braille, wheelchairs, and other compensatory aids. The objective was to facilitate understanding through concrete examples, stories, and practical experiences, capturing the attention of the youngest students.

For secondary school students and teachers, a more in-depth expository-explanatory approach was adopted, adapted to this level of education. The talks focused on presenting concepts, causes, and consequences related to disability, promoting critical reflection, questioning, and awareness-raising.

In addition to transmitting knowledge, the sessions offered moments of direct interaction with the students through more playful dynamics, such as games, recreational activities, songs, and poetry, making the learning process more participatory and enriching.

In total, more than 450 students participated in these educational activities, which addressed various topics related to the rights and inclusion of people with disabilities.

This activity is part of the project “Improving municipal policies for people with disabilities in Maputo”, funded by the Municipality of Barcelona and implemented by medicusmundi, in collaboration with the Maputo Municipal Council (CMM) and the Association of People with Disabilities of Mozambique (ADEMO).
