Prioritize breastfeeding: create sustainable support systems
The Government of Mozambique, through the Health Sector of Cabo Delgado, in partnership with the organization medicusmundi, will promote an awareness-raising campaign on healthy eating and breastfeeding from August 1 to 7. The initiative is part of the celebrations of World Breastfeeding Week, which this year is held under the slogan: "Prioritize breastfeeding: create sustainable support systems".
The campaign will be carried out with the financial support of the Generalitat Valenciana and the Valencian Cooperation, as part of the ongoing effort to strengthen maternal and child health interventions in the province. The focus is particularly on areas affected by insecurity and population displacement, where access to information and health services remains limited.
Planned activities include radio announcements in local languages, the distribution of informational posters and brochures, and community theatre performances addressing the importance of breastfeeding and maternal nutrition. These efforts aim to primarily reach pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and children under five, groups considered priority in the fight against malnutrition and preventable childhood diseases.
Health authorities emphasize that exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life remains one of the most effective practices for ensuring healthy growth and preventing disease. Therefore, they call for the active participation of communities, local leaders, and health professionals in disseminating the campaign's messages.
Therefore, World Breastfeeding Week will be an opportunity not only to educate but also to strengthen the collective commitment to building sustainable support systems for mothers, babies, and families, even in times of crisis.
Authorities emphasize that the campaign's success also depends on the active participation of families, community leaders, and grassroots organizations. The campaign, therefore, aims to strengthen support networks within communities, promoting practices that respect local culture and value the central role of women in promoting children's health.
